Set during the turbulent Spring and Autumn Period, the story follows King Gou Jian of Yue, who is defeated and taken captive by King Fu Chai of Wu. While appearing loyal in captivity, Gou Jian secretly plans his revenge. Eventually allowed to return to Yue, he begins rebuilding his kingdom with the help of wise advisors like Fan Li and Wen Zhong.

As Fu Chai becomes distracted by the charms of beauties Xi Shi and Zheng Dan, Gou Jian strengthens Yue and cleverly undermines Wu through strategic diplomacy and bribery—patiently preparing for the moment he can reclaim his honor and kingdom.
